Our story

The 4DAT Way

Why Boat 4DAT exists, the rules it is built on, and who builds it.

Why Boat 4DAT exists

Boat records end up scattered across notebooks, receipts, and memory. Boat 4DAT keeps boat profiles, systems, maintenance tasks and service history, fuel logs, and operating costs in one place, so you can plan trips and upkeep with less guesswork.

The 4DAT way

Every 4DAT app is built on the same few rules. Here is how Boat 4DAT follows them:

  1. Your information stays on your device. Your boats, systems, maintenance, and cost records are saved on your device. The app has no network code and no cloud sync, and its App Store label is "Data Not Collected".
  2. An account is optional. There is no account and no sign-in, on iPhone or Android.
  3. We keep only what a feature needs. The app sends nothing to 4DAT or to any provider.
  4. No ads and no tracking of you. No ads, no analytics, and no tracking SDKs in the app. The website's gear guides count page views and link clicks anonymously, with no cookies, IP addresses, or user IDs.
  5. Supported honestly. The iPhone app is free with no purchases. On Android, Boat 4DAT Pro is an optional $8.99-a-year subscription; the free plan covers one boat. The app and the gear guides link to Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, Boat 4DAT earns from qualifying purchases.

About the founder

Boat 4DAT is built by Frank Castle, founder of 4DAT LLC in Florida. Frank is an engineer who has spent his career on systems that have to work when it counts. 4DAT is how he builds everyday tools: simple, private, and yours.

Frank is also an author. His novel Spartan Code: Red tells the story of Red Platoon.
